Test what's coming

New work lands on the dev version of Tessera first, about a week before a release. If you'd like to try it early and help find problems, you can install the dev app next to the normal one. You can go back at any time.

Dev is tried on a few screens before it goes out, not on every one, and it can break. Only use it on a screen you don't mind fixing.

Install the dev app

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings → Apps → App store, open the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Repositories. Add:

    https://github.com/MaxGramser/homeassistant_espscreen#dev

The store now shows a second app: Tessera Screen Manager (dev).

  2. Stop Tessera Screen Manager, the normal app. Both use the same port for camera pictures, so only one can run at a time.

  3. Install Tessera Screen Manager (dev) and start it. A small dev label next to the name Tessera, at the top of the sidebar, tells you which one you're in.

The dev app keeps its own data, so it starts without tiles. It finds your screens, but you set up their pages again. Your pages in the normal app stay where they are.

Put your screens on dev

Open a screen in the sidebar and, in its details under the firmware, choose Reinstall from dev. It builds the newest dev firmware and installs it over Wi-Fi, like an update. To do every screen, one after the other, use Reinstall all from dev under Settings → Firmware updates.

Get the newest dev

Dev keeps the same version number from one change to the next, so Home Assistant doesn't offer it as an update.

  • The app: Settings → Apps → App store → ⋮ → Check for updates, then open the dev app and choose ⋮ → Rebuild.
  • The screens: Reinstall from dev again.

Nightly automatic updates leave a screen on dev alone until a release raises the number.

Go back

Stop the dev app and start the normal one again. Your screens are still on dev firmware, so update each one from the normal app once the next release is out, or install it again from Firmware & USB if you want to go back right away.

Report a problem

Open an issue on GitHub with the screen you use and the app's log (the dev app's Log tab in Home Assistant). That's what makes testing dev useful. Thank you!
