Updates

Two things get updates: the app in Home Assistant, and the firmware on each screen. The app first, then the screens.

The app

Home Assistant offers a new version under Settings → Apps → Tessera Screen Manager → Update, like any app. Your tiles, pages and settings stay. Afterwards, reload any Tessera tab that was open.

Make a Home Assistant backup that includes the app before a big step. And never remove and reinstall the app to update it: that can erase its data.

The screens

Every app version belongs to one firmware version. After an app update, a screen with newer firmware available shows an amber light and an update button in Tessera's sidebar. Its details fold shows the version it has and the version it gets, and What's new lists the changes.

Update builds the screen's firmware on your Home Assistant machine and installs it over Wi-Fi. You see "Building the firmware…", "Writing the firmware over Wi-Fi…", "Waiting for the screen to come back…" and "Checking that it stays stable…". A build takes minutes; the screen restarts once at the end. Your tiles, settings, Wi-Fi, keys and touch calibration all stay.

Settings → Firmware updates shows how many screens are behind, with Update all when there are several. Screens update one at a time.

A screen with newer firmware than the app says Configuration problem. Update add-on. on the glass until the app catches up.

Every night, by itself

Turn on Update automatically every night under Settings → Firmware updates. Between 03:00 and 06:00 Tessera updates one screen at a time. If one fails, the round stops and Home Assistant shows a notification; the other screens are left as they are.

When the language changes

A screen carries its language in its firmware. After a change under Language & region, every screen shows "New language" and takes it with its next update.

When Wi-Fi can't do it

A screen that keeps restarting can't update over Wi-Fi. Install it once over USB from Firmware & USB, choosing the screen's existing profile: it keeps its name, keys and calibration. Don't run New screen for it.

Screens with 4 MB of flash

The CYD and the Hosyond get more room for firmware since app 0.4.56. The move happens during a normal update, which takes a few minutes longer that one time. Screens with 4 MB of flash explains it, and what to do if you flash those boards yourself.
