I have the same display type and while I was trying to get it running with ESPHome and LVGL (before knowing that Tessera exists), I had the same idea. During my research I found articles that do not reccomend using the camera for motion dection for some reasons:

  1. Power consumption is high, because the camera is working all the time and the ESP has to do the analysis.
  2. The camera needs an algorhythm that analyses the input. It has to divide the image into zones of interest and detect that random change in lighting conditions is no motion. Also the camera cannot check the distance of an object.

What can one do instead?

  1. Simple and fast: choose a simple and cheap (Zigbee) presence detection sensor. You can configure the sesitivity easily and HA can push a wake-up event to the display via automation.
  2. Even a cheaper solution but more work: buy a radar based presence detection sensor and connect it to the GPIO Pins. If you are skillful, you might be able to place it in the display housing. It works through thin plastic.

I think that both solutions are more reliable than the camera.
