DPI or font size setting for larger displays

HeronimonimoSuggested this wish ·

What would you like to add

After getting very enthusiastic using a 4" Guition display I also bought a 10" panel.

I find that this 10" panel is positioned a bit more on a distance in the livingroom which makes it hard to read. Also the current 25 tile config leaves a lot of empty space around text.

Would it be possible to get some kind of scaling setting? All elements (text, icons, buttons) could probably get 25-50% bigger with the same 25 tile per screen setup for the 10" display.

Found a way to scale, added this to the substitutions in the .yaml: DISPLAY_DPI: "225"

Maybe something to document in the readme as solution for scaling?

Just tested in my panel, really better to read with this DPI of 225, only some texts are truncated with "..."

@MaxGramser this can be a very nice to be added to settings if possible instead of a compile time definition.

You can play around a little bit with the DPI to see if a lower DPI works a bit better. For the 10" screen the original DPI was 150.

@MaxGramser even with DPI 225 there is quite a lot empty vertical space with 5 rows. So would still like to go to 6 or more rows on this screen.

A short update: this request is where a closer look at the 10-inch started. Before sizes or rows on the big screens can change, the screen has to use its memory well, otherwise a bigger layout could take it offline.

That part is in 0.4.58 (firmware 0.34.0): the 10-inch takes 256 tiles on up to 16 pages, every tile type has a memory price, the editor shows how much room is left, and a layout that does not fit is refused before it is saved. Top bar items can now be icon only, and a page's top bar takes 12 of them.

Scaling itself is not in this release. The DISPLAY_DPI substitution @Heronimonimo found works well for bigger text, as @ivanfmartinez confirmed, and anyone can try it without touching their own YAML: open the screen in Tessera, choose More → Override YAML and add

substitutions:
  DISPLAY_DPI: "225"

then update the screen. The 10-inch's own value is about 149: a higher number makes everything bigger, and too high a number starts to cut off longer names. Experiments like this are very welcome: if you find a value that reads well on your panel, or a card where text gets cut off, please share it here. That teaches all of us what really works on the glass.

Got a screen running? Tell others which board you have and what works on the Tessera website. It helps everyone pick a screen that works.
