More flexibility for tile sizing and navigation

ElianSTSuggested this wish ·

Hi Max,

Would it be possible to add more flexibility for resizing tiles on the screen?

For example, having a 3x3 layout where tiles can have different sizes, such as 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, etc. This could make it possible to use the available screen space more efficiently.

It would also be nice if a tile could be configured as a navigation tile, instead of only using the buttons at the bottom to switch between pages. For example, a tile could open another page when tapped.

Another useful option could be displaying multiple sensors/entities within a single tile. For example, a single tile could show both grid import and grid export power, instead of needing a separate tile for each sensor.

It would also be great to have an option to choose the number of decimal places displayed for sensor values. At the moment, values can show up to three decimal places. It would be nice to be able to choose between 0, 1, 2 or 3 decimal places, depending on the sensor and personal preference.

And finally, thank you for this awesome project! It is already really nice to use, and these are just some ideas that could make it even more flexible and useful.

Hey! Good news on part of this: 0.2.74 (out now) adds a Go to page tile — tap it and it jumps straight to a page you choose, so a tile can do the job of the bottom Next/Previous buttons. It also adds a Full page tile size: one tile that takes a whole page (all six slots) as one big button.

Variable tile sizes mixed on one page (1x1, 2x1, 2x2), several sensors inside one tile, and a configurable number of decimals aren't in yet — still open, thanks for the ideas.

adding to this. when using the next page tiles. is it possible to remove the bottom of the page next/previous buttons and extend the size of the tiles to utilise all the screen?

@lokitol yes, this is in 0.2.82 (firmware 0.2.69), out now:

  1. Update ESP Screen Manager in Home Assistant, then press Update on the screen so it gets firmware 0.2.69.
  2. Open the screen in ESP Screens → Screen settings and turn off Page buttons. The same switch is on the screen's own settings page (Screen) and in Home Assistant as switch.<screen>_page_buttons.
  3. The bar under the tiles goes away and the tiles grow into its room (14 px taller on a Guition, 9 px on a CYD).

Pages then change with your Go to page tiles, or by swiping if Swipe between pages is on. If both are off, the editor tells you which pages your Go to page tiles don't reach, so you can't lock yourself out of a page. When the page buttons are on, they now look cleaner too: a chevron in each corner and a dot per page.

Let me know how it works on your screen!

This is great and is developing nicely. With the Goto Tiles would it be possible to have the option to remove the Page X on the second line as it appears unnecessary in some circumstances? Similarly, on the Script Tiles I think the last run line is again not needed in many circumstances. My other layout/navigation enhancement ideas would be: A swipe down from the top to return to the home screen (or tap the name at the top left) And also an Icon only button which could be half the width of a standard button. I suspect that would be quite a re-write though. However be assured this is an amazing way to quickly deploy a control panel.

Good news on your last two points. Since 0.2.105 the second line under a tile's name is yours to pick: leave it empty, so a Go-to tile no longer has to say "Page 3" and a script tile no longer has to show when it last ran, or put your own words there, or another value of the entity.

Thanks for keeping this thread going, it has shaped a lot of this.

@MrEcosse your two navigation ideas are both in 0.2.122 (firmware 0.2.100), out now.

A house at the top left. Every page carries one, the way a website's header carries its logo, and one tap takes the screen back to page 1 from wherever it stands. Not the page title itself: since 0.2.105 every page can carry a title of its own, so the words up there change as you move around and would say nothing about where a tap would land. A house always means the same thing. It stands on the baseline of the page title and is a third taller than the bar's own icons, the title moves behind it, and the clock and the values on the right keep every pixel they had.

A swipe back to the home screen. Swiping up from the bottom edge goes to page 1. Up from the bottom rather than down from the top, because that is the way a phone goes home. It is the same gesture the side edges already use for pages: start in the bottom band, far enough up, more up than sideways, once per touch. On a screen that turns its pages with a flick instead of an edge swipe, a flick up over the tiles does it. It follows Swipe between pages, as the side swipes do.

Every swipe that lands now lights up the edge it came from as well: a soft white haze that holds for a moment and fades away in about half a second, so the screen answers the gesture before the new page is drawn.

If you would rather keep the bar as it was, Show home button in Screen settings, on the screen's own settings page and as switch.<screen>_show_home_button in Home Assistant turns the house off. It is on by default.

To get it: update ESP Screen Manager in Home Assistant, then press Update on each screen so it takes firmware 0.2.100.

Still open from this thread: tiles of different sizes mixed on one page, several entities in one tile, a configurable number of decimals, and your icon-only button at half width.

Two more from this thread are in 0.3.1, out now.

Tiles of different sizes on one page. Next to one cell, double width and full page, a tile can now be 1 × 2 or 2 × 2. Drag its edge in the editor or pick the size in the tile settings. The cards use the extra room: a player shows its album cover behind the track, a climate tile shows the setpoint and its modes together, and a cover with tilt gets its slat control.

Pages you only reach from a tile. A page can stay out of the page dots and swipes and open from a Go to page tile, with a Back key that returns the way you came. Any page can be Home now too.

Update ESP Screen Manager first and then your screens, and take a Home Assistant backup before you do. The app moves your layouts to a new format once.

Still open: several entities in one tile, a configurable number of decimals and the half-width icon button.

As you already mentioned, bottom swipe up makes a phone go to the home screen, what about swiping from the top to reveal quick brightness control, maybe top 4 favorite entities, similar to the badges in the HA home screen? You could also push HA notifications to it (like vacuum done, doorbell rang with time info). To top it off, maybe the current active media player volume control? Swipe up and you are back home again, like already implemented. Not sure if it is possible to play audio on some models that could be controlled that way too. So essentially creating a "quick settings and favorites" page that is linked to swipe down. This would complete the modern "phone navigation" design philosophy.

One more from this thread is in 0.4.32 (firmware 0.19.0): tiles of any size on a page, not only the named ones. Select a tile in the editor and drag its right or bottom edge to any rectangle, for example 2 x 1, 1 x 3 or 3 x 2 on a 3 x 3 screen. Update ESP Screen Manager first, then the screen.
