Idle slideshow
What would you like to add
So this is a bit of a stretch for this project. But. Would it be possible to configure some kind of slideshow? I have a Immich instance i use which i would love to be able to connect to these screens to give a photo frame when they aren't being used.
Potentially extend this a bit so instead of going to sleep. The user has the option to go to slideshow mode.
Happy to look into this myself if you would be interested in in merging such a PR.
Immich integration exists for home assistant. So my general thinking is to build something that can made use of media directly from HA rather than individual integrations for different media providers.
How this relates to Home Assistant
It mostly doesn't. It's more of a QOL feature to give the screen multi purpose.

Add a commentGreat idea!
Would be cool as a screensaver after x minutes of inactivity.

Thanks for the idea @vithurshanselvarajah, and @Heronimonimo for the nudge. A first step towards this is out in ESP Screen Manager 0.4.48 (firmware 0.29.0): a screensaver that shows instead of the dimmed tiles when Auto standby kicks in.
Under Settings → Screensaver you pick a media player and a camera, and put Music playing, Camera and Clock in the order you want. The screen shows the first one that is available right now: the cover while music plays, the camera when it stops, and a large clock otherwise. Covers and cameras fill the whole screen, a little darker so a short title stays readable, and a tap just wakes the screen.
A slideshow is not in it yet, but it fits right in as one more step in that list, and building it on Home Assistant's own media (like the Immich integration) rather than a separate integration is the way I'd want it too. The way a picture gets to the screen is already there: the add-on prepares one picture at exactly the screen's size and the screen only shows it. If you'd still like to look into it, docs/SCREENSAVER.md describes how the screensaver works, and
screen_manager/app/screen_saver.pyis where a new step would start. Happy to help along the way.Got a screen running? Tell others which board you have and what works on the Tessera website. It helps everyone pick a screen that works.
Like my work? Consider buying me a coffee, much appreciated!

@MaxGramser Sounds good and it sounds like most of the footwork is already done.
I'm mid porting this to my waveshare esp32-s3-touch-lcd-4 rev3.0. I have functional display & touch but i suspect it shares the same quirk some waveshare devices have with display brightness control.
Once that work is done, i'll start working on this as its pretty much feature complete for me and i know i'd enjoy having a slideshow!

Any chance we could get an option for the camera standby image to be adjustable like the tile itself? Zoom to fit screen or full image without crop? The camera gets pretty useless on a 1:1 or 9:16 vertical screen when the base image is 16:9.
