Better information when waiting for HA and also after to indicate how is the wifi state

ivanfmartinezSuggested this wish ·

What would you like to add

I have moved the screen to another place and it keeps on the connecting to HA, maybe the wifi signal is weak

Will be nice to have any other visible indication of state of wifi connection and signal without having to connect it to the computer to get the logs

How this relates to Home Assistant

Nothing on HA, just on the display itself

Pictures, mockups, or examples

Maybe icon on top indicating wifi connection state, this icon can be pressed to open another screen with extra information about connection, access points available on the selected network, if connected the IP address, signal strength

I've implemented connection diagnostics locally. These changes are pending an upcoming PR and are not merged or released yet.

  • Settings → This screen shows Wi-Fi connection state, network name, signal strength in dBm, the current IP address and the Home Assistant connection state. The displayed information refreshes while the page is open.
  • During startup, this page opens automatically when ESPHome reports a Wi-Fi connection problem, or after five seconds connected to the network without a Home Assistant API connection. It closes when the connection recovers; Back dismisses it.
  • Once the panel has received its layout, a later connection loss keeps the existing tiles visible.
  • Startup status messages wait one second before appearing, avoiding brief flashes during a normal boot. The panel no longer reports an empty layout before the saved layout has arrived. Actual errors are shown immediately.

Screenshots below are from the actual firmware LVGL renderer, with example network details. The first shows the regular settings page; the second shows the startup diagnostics view with Wi-Fi connected but Home Assistant unavailable.

This implementation covers the connection details and startup diagnostics. A nearby access-point list and a new top-bar Wi-Fi button are outside this upcoming change.

This is in 0.4.63 (firmware 0.38.0), released today.

  • The starting screen says what it is doing, step by step: connecting to Wi-Fi with the network's name, getting an address, waiting for Home Assistant, waiting for Tessera, loading tiles. Under each step it shows the network, its signal in dBm and the screen's address, and how long the step has taken.
  • When the Wi-Fi does not work, it says why: the network is not found, the password is not accepted, or the signal is too weak. After a minute (or once the fallback hotspot is up) the Wi-Fi problem screen names the network and the reason. On boards with a hotspot, it is now called "Tessera" plus the screen's name, and a QR code under it lets a phone join in one tap.
  • A step that takes long says what usually fixes it, and a connection with a key that is not this screen's is named at once, with the address it came from.
  • A Wi-Fi signal item for the top bar, read by the screen itself: four bars down to one, struck through without a network, as an icon alone or with a percentage or dBm, always or only when the signal is weak. A connection warning item appears only while Home Assistant or Tessera is away. Tap either to open This screen on the settings page.
  • This screen now also shows the Wi-Fi network with its signal and whether Tessera is connected, and refreshes while it is open.

@woozer, thank you: your screenshots here showed the Wi-Fi rows on This screen first, and they are in this release in that spirit. You're credited in the changelog.

Update the app first, then the screen. Closing this one, thanks for the idea!
