test 8 cell option with four rows on Guition 4"

HeronimonimoSuggested this wish ·

What would you like to add

With the recent updates using more of the available screen real estate in the vertical direction it seems it might an interesting option to test a version with 4 rows of cells.

Pictures, mockups, or examples

In image below you can see that for entities the cells now have quite some empty space at the top and bottom. Image

This is a mockup with 4 rows, looks better in my opinion. Image

Great suggestion, @Heronimonimo, and thanks for the mockup! It's in 0.4.31, as an option.

When you add a screen, New screen now asks for the 4-inch Guition how many tiles go on a page: two columns of three rows (the usual size) or of four rows, with eight smaller tiles on a page. Every card works in every size on four rows too: wide, tall, square and full-page tiles, sliders, media and climate controls.

Three rows and four rows on the 4-inch Guition

The same thirteen tiles rendered from the firmware itself: three rows above, four rows below.

A screen you already have gets four rows like this:

  1. Update ESP Screen Manager to 0.4.31.
  2. Add this line under substitutions: in the screen's own YAML (in ESPHome Device Builder):
    GRID_ROWS: "4"

  3. Install the screen again. It gets firmware 0.18.1, which brings the eight cards four rows need.

Your saved layout moves on to four rows by itself, with every tile on its own page, row and column. The new row stays empty for you to fill.

A row is about 11 mm high on four rows, so long names end in dots a little sooner and a graph gets flatter. That's why three rows stays the default. More in docs/GUITION.md.

I'm closing this one; let me know how it looks on your wall!

Can this be mixed? So a setting per page instead of setting per display?

For pages with lights it feels to cramped, but for pages with entity data it looks great.

Good question! A different grid per page is a big change: the grid is part of the screen's firmware, and the way tiles are placed and sent to the screen assumes one grid for every page. So that's not something I'll add soon.

But you can get close to it today. On four rows, make the light tiles tall (1 x 2): a light, switch or scene that is two cells high becomes one big button, with a large circle, its name and its state. A lights page then has four big buttons, bigger than the tiles on three rows, while your entity pages keep eight small tiles.

Let me know if that works for you!
