Location Map
What would you like to add
The one thing missing for me for this to easily replace an android tablet/phone is to show a map card to display gps locations.
Apologies if I'm missing this, so many updates have been added but I have looked each day and tried to keep up with all the updates, but don't think I seen it and surprised no one else has suggested it.
How this relates to Home Assistant
This use a device tracker entity displayed on a map.
Pictures, mockups, or examples
This is an example of standard map card from the home assistant website, a card like this would be perfect, but something simpler with just a marker of the current location would be excellent:

Add a commentWould love this, i need to check if this is possible here on the ESP32, especially how we draw the map.... it's on my list!

I'm attempting to build it with Claude Code as a proof of concept, it certainly looks doable just may not have time to test it for a couple of days.

Thanks @stevenhorner! This is better suited to a discussion than an issue, so I moved it here: https://github.com/MaxGramser/homeassistant_espscreen/discussions/105
Please continue the conversation there. I'm closing this issue to keep the tracker for bugs and concrete board requests.

I managed to get this working on my Guition 4" but it is all written with AI.
Here's how it looks in Home Assistant:
This is it on the screen:
For the pictures I've set it to Town for the zoom level so as not to show my exact house, but you can change the zoom.
This uses a person entity and adds a Map Display option. You can add additional entities to the map. There are a few things I still want to be able to adjust and I started this a few ago so it's a few versions behind at the moment.

But it looks super cool and I wanna try to include it in the full project

Thanks again @stevenhorner, the map card is now in ESP Screens 0.4.34 with firmware 0.20.0 (0.4.33 brought it, but that app did not start; 0.4.34 fixes that, so update straight to 0.4.34).
Your branch showed how it could work, and I rebuilt it on the current code. I really liked how you sent the map to the screen as a picture, exactly the way a live camera arrives: the screen needs no map code at all, and no location ever reaches it. That part is the same now. Also from your version: the framings (everyone on the card or a fixed view), other people riding along, and the movement mark, so a map is only drawn again when someone moves. You are credited as co-author on the commit and in the release notes.
What is different:
One thing from your original request is not there yet: the tile's entity is a person, and the people riding along are people too. A device tracker shows on the map by assigning it to a person in Home Assistant (Settings, People). Device trackers on their own may come later.
You have the 4-inch Guition: could you try it on your own screen and let me know how it looks and whether the map follows you around? Details are in docs/MAP.md.

This is so cool, really nice implementation!
On my 10" screen loading the full map is a bit slow. Is there anything that can be done to improve this? Is the image already compressed to display resolution size before sending it over to the board?

Thanks for expanding on my testing work. I've noticed that after around 15-20 minutes the map stops displaying and shows shows Away or Home for a person. If I change the page and go back again it refreshes and shows the map again. I need to do some testing to see if this is because the location hasn't changed or just because it times out.
Also in the settings screen in Home assistant it doesn't show the map on the tile, unless you press Preview. This did work on my test code
On the screenshot above this is from the settings page, on the actual screen or when pressing preview there is a map. This is also the view that the screen falls back to after 15-20 minutes.

I'm also seeing timeouts since today on map and camera streams on my Guition V3 10".
When the new map functionality was released it worked well. So I assume this issue came with one of the changes to media in the last few builds.

Could also be the release that introduced the swipe up and down that caused it.

Thanks both, this helped a lot. ESP Screens 0.4.51 with firmware 0.30.0 fixes the map falling back to Home or Away.
What went wrong. A page with only maps on it (no camera) asked ESP Screens once for its picture. If that one answer came back without a picture, the screen never asked again and showed the plain person tiles until you turned the page. That is exactly what you saw, Steven: going to another page and back made it ask again. I could make it happen on a test screen every time.
What 0.4.51 changes:
Update the app to 0.4.51 first, then the screen to firmware 0.30.0.
The editor. You are right, Steven: the layout view in the editor does not draw a map yet, only Preview does. That is a missing piece, not something your version broke. It is on the list.
The slow first load on the 10-inch, Heronimonimo: the map is drawn at exactly the size of its card and sent in 8-bit colour, and a full page on the 10-inch is capped at 1024 by 640 pixels. The first map of an area is the slowest, because Home Assistant fetches the streets from OpenStreetMap then. After that they are kept for a week, and the next map only redraws the markers.
If it still happens after the update, please send:
