installation method for dockerized HA instances

dfritsch86Suggested this wish ·

For those running HA in docker instead as via HA OS, it would be great to be able to install this project as a standalone container.

Thanks for the request! You can now run ESP Screen Manager in Docker next to Home Assistant Container, without the App store.

In short:

  • It's the same app as the Home Assistant app, with the ESPHome CLI included, in its own container. Compose builds the image straight from this repository.
  • It connects to Home Assistant with a long-lived access token that you save in a file next to compose.yaml.
  • It uses host networking. The page has no login of its own, so it only listens on 127.0.0.1:8099. Open it as a sidebar panel with hass_ingress, so Home Assistant handles the login, or through an SSH tunnel.
  • USB flashing works on Linux by passing the serial port to the container. Updates over Wi-Fi need no extra setup.

This route is brand new. I've built and started the container and checked the page and the ESPHome CLI inside it, but I haven't run it against a real Home Assistant Container install yet. Could you give it a try and let me know here how it goes? I'm especially curious whether it connects to Home Assistant, whether the hass_ingress panel works, and whether flashing over USB works.

Worked like a charm. I did not contain the screen via usb to the machine, but used the new "build and download image" feature, to flash it via ESP Home Web.
